This is a problem that occurs frequently with our Alexander Street Press streaming video collection.  It's a result of a windows feature called "direct access" which is what allows users to access network drives while off campus.  Unfortunately it can interfere with the authentication process that gets you access to some of our resources.  The workaround is slightly different depending on what version of windows you are using.

Windows 7

Windows 8

Windows 10

Here's the process for Windows 7:

  • Locate the Corporate Connectivity icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen.  It looks like a desktop computer:

  • If you can't see this icon, click on the arrow in the system tray and then click on "Customize"

  • Next to "DirectAccess Connectivity Assistant," choose "Show icon and notification."

Right-click the Corporate Connectivity icon.  In the box that appears, click "Use local DNS resolution."

Now we just need to flush the DNS:

  • Press the windows key or click the start button and type "cmd" without quotes and press enter to run the command prompt
  • When in the command prompt, type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes, and press enter.

  • close the command prompt, and that's it.

You should now be able to access library resources from off-campus.

NOTE: This workaround is not saved permanently to your laptop.  Every time you open a browser session while off-campus, you should double check your "Corporate Connectivity" status and update it if necessary.

Here's the process for Windows 8:

  • Press Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and the "I" key to open the settings sidebar.
  • select your network connection
  • click ""EKU Connection" and click disconnect.

Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.

Here's the process for Windows 10:

  • Press Windows key (usually between Left Ctrl and Left Alt) to open start menu search.
  • windows search bar
  • Type: DirectAccess, and click "Direct access settings" and you should see this screen:
  • Simply click where it says EKU Connection, and disconnect (If disconnect doesn't appear, you're probably on campus!):
  • *note* While you are disconnected you won't have access to network drives.  To re-enable network drive access, just reconnect.
  • That's it!
